SURFING IN TAMARINDO

02_clip_image002_0003
Costa Rica has established quite a reputation among surfers around the world. With the outstanding quality of the waves that Costa Rica proudly boasts, any surfer can and will find the right spot! Surfers thrive off of the plentiful waves that the extraordinary beaches on the Northern Pacific coast provide. Different beaches get plenty of the big waves that the true surf fanatics live for, while others are perfect for beginners. Among all of the spots in Costa Rica , by far the most popular all year round is Playa Tamarindo and surrounding areas.

Warm water surfing is enjoyed year 'round and families find this area offers opportunities for surfers of all skill levels to enjoy the great waves that bless this part of the coast. Every year, thousands of people visit Costa Rica with only one thing on their mind....surfing! Tamarindo, once a "secret spot" among the surfing elite has become a world- famous surfing destination since the filming of "Endless Summer II". Tamarindo has been blessed by consistent swells and off-shore conditions. Surfers can watch the waves of the Tamarindo river mouth peel right from the beach. There are six excellent surf breaks within a short walk from any Hotel in Tamarindo. At Iguana Surf we can help you plan your trips to the many great breaks in and around the Tamarindo area (Langosta, Playa Grande, Avellanas….).

BREAK DESCRIPTION TAMARINDO

The town of Tamarindo has two fun breaks: El Estero, a excellent river mouth break where the Tamarindo Estuary hits the ocean. Pico Pequeno, a lava finger reef which can get perfect with a swell. Mid-tide is best for both breaks. Go surfing any tide except dead low.

BREAK DESCRIPTION LANGOSTA

Rights and lefts breaking over rocks and sand in front of a river mouth. Usually a little bigger than the nearby breaks in Tamarindo. Very Fun surfing, but not always perfect waves. From Tamarindo, get on the only road leading south. 1 Km south of Tamarindo. Ask anyone in town.

BREAK DESCRIPTION PLAYA GRANDE

02_clip_image002_0004
Beach break with perfect left and right peaks holds waves up to almost double-overhead. A very consistent break, Playa Grande almost always has fun, ridable waves, and catches more swell usually than Tamarindo.

BREAK DESCRIPTION PLAYA AVELLANAS

About 5 different good Reef/Sand breaks with semi-hollow lefts and rights, located on a 2 mile stretch of beach. Surfing is best Mid to high tides, avoid during low tide. Playa Avellanas is located 10 km. south of Tamarindo.

WITCH'S ROCK

Witch's Rock is o ne of the most famous breaks in the country. Most well known for it's fast hollow rights, but when it's smaller the lefts are good also. Beautiful and remote, every surfer wants to visit "Witch's." There are no boat taxi's from Tamarindo to Witch's Rock and i t isn't always possible to drive into Witch's, because of the rain/roads.

DRIVING: Located in the Santa Rosa National Park , it's possible to drive all the way to the beach if there hasn't been too much rain. (4x4 DEFINETLY REQUIRED!). The park charges $6/person if you drive in. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from the park entrance to the beach. Once you get to the beach, it's about another mile walk up the beach to the break.

BOAT TAXI FROM COCO: The best way to go is to drive down to Playa del Coco (about 1 hour ride from Tamarindo Boats are available from Playa del Coco for about $250/boat/day. They take you there and wait for you outside the break, as long as you want surf. Another advantage to taking a boat there is you can check Ollie's Point also (which is often better than Witch's). It's a good idea to get 6 people together to split the boat, otherwise it gets expensive. In Playa del Coco, people are always looking to share a boat. Organized tours to Witch's Rock are available in Tamarindo from $65 to $85 per person.

CAMPING: Do it! When it's possible to drive in, it's beautiful to camp right in the Park. They have camping areas right next to where you park your car, including a shower (not potable though!). Bring lots of supplies!!! They have nothing there.

OLLIES POINT

Excellent, fast hollow right point break made famous in "The Endless Summer II." Like all the spots in the N. Pacific, better on high tide. It's better to try to avoid it during dead low tide if possible. Getting There: There is no Beach Access. The only way to get there is to rent a boat from Playa del Coco.
