The best surf destinations in Central America offer an enviable array of spectacular beaches – some of the best in the world.

Central America is a paradise for surfers, with several countries boasting dreamy beaches with consistent waves and enough variety to suit surfers of every skill level. Add to that a year-round balmy climate, warm and hospitable locals, and a bunch of super vibrant cultures, and it’s not hard to see how this region consistently rates as the most rewarding on earth for surf enthusiasts. From Nicaragua to Panama and Costa Rica, check out the 10 best surf destinations you absolutely MUST visit in Central America if you’re a surf-nutter like us!

10. Playa Maderas, Nicaragua

Playa Maderas is just north of San Juan del Sure and is perhaps the best-known surf beach in Nicaragua. Waves here are reliable (as are the off-shore winds), perfect for surfers of all levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. They come here knowing what to expect: a bevy of consistent left- and right-hand waves that can reach up to 12 feet during the peak season. The surfing community here is very friendly so it’s easy to make friends in one of the many beachside eateries after a full day in the surf.

Insider’s Tip: Head to the beach at dawn to catch the best waves AND increase your chances of spotting dolphins playing just offshore.

9. Punta Roca, El Salvador

Home to what is considered by many experienced surfers to be the best right-hand break in the region, El Salvador’s Punta Roca typically boasts long and fast waves. Advanced surfers looking for a super thrilling ride will find this place really hits the spot. During the rainy season, between May and October, waves can also easily reach up to 10 feet high here. As its name suggests – Punta Roca means ‘rock point’ in Spanish – this glorious beach is rocky, rugged, and absolutely stunning. Overall, this is not a crowded area – because El Salvador is not overly touristed – so neither the beach, town, nor the sea ever gets too crowded. One of the best surf destinations way off the beaten path!

Insider’s Tip: Head to the beach in the early morning before the wind picks up. Also, it’s a great idea to wear water shoes to navigate the rockiest entry points.

8. Playa Venao, Panama

Another visually stunning beach is Playa Venao, a real surf destination a gem on Panama’s Pacific coast. Well-formed waves breaking in both directions attract intermediate surfers who know their way around a board – and wave. The crescent-shaped bay, which is beautifully framed by lush jungle, hosts surf several surf competitions throughout the year. The very laid-back beach settlement (calling it a town might be a bit of a stretch) is perfect for those looking to combine surf sessions with some chill time. This is one of Central America’s best surf destinations that’s yet to go mainstream so what you can look forward to is great surfing, gorgeous sunsets, a few restaurants, and not much else!

Insider’s Tip: Check out the local tide charts and plan your sessions around high tide for the best waves. When you’re ready for a superb treat, enjoy a post-surf massage and smoothie at Eco Venao Spa & Lodge.

7. Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica

This is Costa Rica’s first entry into the list of best surf destinations in Central America, and it won’t be the last. Surfing in Costa Rica is one of the country’s biggest highlights, so, unsurprisingly, you’ll find a few mentions on this list.

Not to be confused with its Nicaraguan namesake, Costa Rica’s Playa Hermosa is near Jacó and is mostly known for its consistent, powerful waves. A magnet for advanced surfers, Hermosa usually boasts swells reaching up to 13 feet, with fast and hollow waves serving up some of the most thrilling surf in all of Central America. After a classic surf challenge? Then Hermosa may be just the best surf destination for you! The four-mile long black-sand beach is spectacular, with a framing jungle that makes for a sensational backdrop. The local vibe is welcoming (because this is Costa Rica, after all) but it can get crowded, competitive and intense out there in good conditions so do watch your space.

Insider’s Tip: When you need a rustic and filling refueling meal, head to a local soda (small eatery) for a taste of authentic Costa Rican casado. This is a delicious dish of rice, beans, grilled meat or fish, salad and fried plantain. It’s the perfect, balanced meal!

6. El Tunco, El Salvador

El Tunco is a small town with an oversized reputation, loved as much for its buzzy nightlife as its excellent surf. It’s a favorite among backpackers and surfers alike. The main surf spots here are a left-hand mouth break (La Bocana) and a right-hand break (Sunzal), both of which offer breaks to cater to different levels. La Bocana is arguably better suited to advanced surfers and Sunzal is just perfect for beginners and intermediates. The town itself boasts a handful of bars, restaurants, and surf shops, and a friendly surf community so if you’re a bit social, El Tunco might well hit the spot. One of our favorites of the best surf destinations when we crave a low-key getaway.

Insider’s Tip: The surf hostels on the beach usually offer board rentals for the duration of your stay and guided surf trips to nearby breaks.

5. Playa Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa is the second surfing in Costa Rica entry and an absolute dream destination for travelers looking for great surf and a charming bohemian town. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, this beach offers a variety of breaks suitable for just about every skill level. The waves are quite consistent year-round, but the absolute best surf conditions are usually from April to early October. Santa Teresa is surrounded by lush jungle so it offers that picture-perfect ‘palm trees lining a white sandy beach’ experience. The beach is framed by verdant jungle and the town is somewhat spread around along the coast. Here, you’ll discover a bunch of great cafés and bars, a few quirky boutiques and an overall bustling vibes that attracts an eclectic and interesting mix of surfers, yogis, and digital nomads. Yet what makes Santa Teresa one of the best surf destinations in Central America is the fact it offers dozens of different surf breaks. There is literally something here for every surfer.

Insider’s Tip: If you wisht to avoid the weekend surf crowds, head to Playa Carmen, just a mile and a half north of Santa Teresa. It’s typically quieter and often boasts equally good waves.

4. Popoyo, Nicaragua

Another fabulous surf spot along Central America’s Pacific coast, Popoyo is Nicaragua’s second contender on this list. Among experienced surfers, its challenging outer reef break is legendary, although the beach actually offers a wide range of breaks that cater to all skill levels. If you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer, you’ll find the inner reef and beach breaks to be much more manageable. What makes Popoyo special is the relatively uncrowded lineup and the diversity of waves all within a small area, not to mention its beautiful ruggedness. The beach is serene and volcanic rock formations stunning, so what’s not to love? There’s not much to do in Popoyo besides surfing, so consider this the kind of place you go to when you want to shut the world out and do nothing but surf your heart out for a few days.

Insider’s Tip: Popoyo actually boasts quite a lot of hidden breaks but they’re only known to locals and difficult to find on your own. Consider hiring a local surf guide who’ll guide you to the best hidden spots that are best for your skill level.

3. Bocas del Toro, Panama

With its intoxicating mix of Afro-Caribbean and Latin influences, abundance of epic waves, and a bustling vibe, Panama’s treasure islands are the best surf destinations for true adventure surfers. An archipelago off Panama’s Caribbean coast, Boca del Toro is most famous for its exquisite biodiversity, turquoise warm waters, and idyllic over-water bungalows outside surfing circles. However, any seasoned surfer will tell you Bocas del Toro is also one of the best surf destinations on earth for advanced surfers – especially from December to March and again between June and August. There’s an abundance of epic surf spot here but check out Bluff Beach (Colon Island) and Silverbacks (Bastimentos Island), both known for their exciting waves and superb scenery.

Insider’s Tip: Bocas is an extraordinary destination for nature lovers. Join a multi-island bout tour to explore the best corners. Most offer snorkeling and lunch. It’s a fantastic way to make the most of your surf trip to Panama.

2. Puerto Sandino, Nicaragua

Offering some of Central America’s longest left-hand waves, Puerto Sandino is one of Nicaragua’s best-hidden gems. This spot is best for advanced surfers, as the waves can get quite powerful, and the conditions are often challenging – one of the main reasons it remains mostly unknown outside dedicated circles. Sandino’s main break is located near a working port, which gives it a distinct industrial backdrop, perfect if you like that kind of rustic charm. The waves here are pretty reliable and can offer rides of up to 1,000 feet on a good day. Serious surfers love Puerto Sandino’s uncrowded lineup and the exciting thrill of its long waves.

Insider’s Tip: The best breaks at Puerto Sandino are accessed by boat. You’ll find plenty of charter transfers that’ll take you directly to your chosen break.

1. Tamarindo, Costa Rica

surfing in Costa Rica

What makes Tamarindo the #1 surf destination in Central America?

Variety is the single biggest attraction here, without a doubt. The main break at Playa Tamarindo offers gentle, rolling waves perfect for beginners, while nearby spots like Playa Grande and Witch’s Rock provide more challenging conditions for advanced surfers. Tamarindo’s surf culture is also one of the most enticing, friendly, and inclusive you’ll ever experience anywhere, with numerous surf schools, shops, and a nightlife that is welcoming to all. This is one of the best surf destinations if traveling solo and wanting to connect with like-minded people.

One of Tamarindo’s unique aspects—and we think the true winning factor—is its location within a swath of remarkable wilderness, which provides a stunning natural setting with abundant wildlife. Surfers can catch waves alongside howler monkeys, iguanas, and a variety of tropical birds. The warm, clear waters and beautiful sunsets make every surf session truly memorable. We don’t believe there’s anywhere on earth that delivers all that.
