The Iguana Surf Beach Hotel is simply different than other housing accommodations in Tamarindo. Aside from the basics, of course, like air-conditioning, working Wi-Fi, and daily housekeeping, the entire Iguana Team takes care of its guests and ensures that they have the best experience possible in the beautiful beach-side town of Tamarindo. They uphold that promise. Part of the exclusive experience of staying at the Iguana Surf Hotel is that it is right upstairs from the very first Tamarindo Surf Shop – Iguana Surf, which was established in 1989. Iguana Surf is a local staple with instructors who come from all over the world, though many are from the surrounding Guanacaste region and have been with Iguana for up to 15 years. Throughout the day, the surf shop sees ticos and travelers alike stopping in to say “hi” and renting boards from any of their 125 options. With its proximity to the shop, the Iguana Surf Beach Hotel guests have the incredible opportunity to build lasting relationships with the Iguana Surf staff, and have lessons and rentals at discounted rates. In between good swells, the staff hangs out together, listens to music, and drinks coffee from the market next door. Not a bad day at work, right?

The hotel completely embodies the “pura vida” vibe. Guests can utilize the lobby space throughout the night by watching soccer games and rugby matches, playing music and card games, and curling up after a long-day of surfing to read a good book.

The Iguana Surf Beach Hotel provides variety. Perhaps the most versatile room for couples and small groups of friends looking to get away for a Costa Rican Surf Trip is one of the four private suites. As a loft layout, these suites have a downstairs living area with a futon, television, and full luxurious bathroom.

Upstairs, there is the option of two individual beds or one king. (Don’t forget that the futon downstairs is perfect for a third friend to join!) These living spaces are thoughtfully designed to give a complete experience for guests traveling through Tamarindo. They are frequented by eager surf campers who come to Tamarindo for a Costa Rican surf vacation of a lifetime. It’s also worth checking out the awesome Tamarindo Surf Camp that was specially designed by Iguana Surf. Inquire at iguana@iguanasurf.net if you have questions about booking and other accommodations!

For vacation-seeking families and large friend groups, the hotel family suite is out-of-this-world. Like the other rooms, this loft-style housing features a large living area below with a futon, television, storage, and two full bathrooms below.

Upstairs there are two single beds in the loft over the living area and an additional closed off master bedroom with one more king and a single bed. This spacious suite can comfortably accommodate up to seven people, whether surf-frenzy families or friend groups!

Are you a solo traveler hoping to catch some waves and improve your surf in Tamarindo? The hotel also offers a dormitory style room with four bunks for a total of eight beds can provide a fun, vibrant, and hostel-type experience. (Don’t worry about getting sweaty at night, however, because all rooms come with air-conditioning.)

In this room, you will find two private showers and toilets, spacious lockers for each bunk (with keys and charging capabilities), and plenty of sink space. Perhaps the biggest bonus of this shared room is that it is perfect for making international friends. The shared room houses three Iguana Surf interns who come from all around the world. The interns love meeting new people, surfing, and showing travelers around the town. This incredible opportunity allows visitors to experience Tamarindo as a local.

Foodies and socialites, are you out there? Tamarindo is full of incredible restaurants within just walking distance for the Iguana Surf Beach Hotel. If you are looking for some tasty Costa Rican grub, there are tons of places to get your fix. For cheap, local food, you can find two people selling meal out of the back of their car everyday for locals and travelers alike. This food is inspired by national dishes such as casado and gallo pinto and it is always fresh and delicious. Also, at 5 US dollars a meal, you won’t have to break the bank to eat well. If you’re looking for ultra-convenience, right outside the beachside hotel, guests enjoy local food both morning and night at Breakfast Grinds and Jolly Roger’s Bar, two of Tamarindo’s Best Restaurants.

These restaurants share the same open-air patio space that overlooks the ocean. The Iguana Surf interns are currently fixated on the “The Grinder” breakfast bagel and legendary iced coffee. It’s the perfect way to start the day, especially when the locals come early in their jersey’s to watch showings of soccer games. (iVamos Ticos!)

At night, the same space is transformed into Jolly Roger’s Bar. Not only does this bar have honest prices for its various food and drinks, they offer daily specials that are always out of this world. Jolly Roger’s Bar has over 40 different types of wing flavors, burgers, pizzas, and more. Vegetarian? Jolly Roger’s also offers a vegetarian cauliflower wing option in every flavor and veggie burgers for all those “veg-heads” out there. In fact, both Breakfast Grinds and Jolly Roger’s offer options for vegetarians, vegans, and other people with dietary restrictions as they are part of the growing list of Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants in Tamarindo. At the end of the day, the Iguana Crew will likely be there drinking a beer and watching the sunset, or listening to live music which is featured almost four nights a week. Some nights, you might even catch the interns playing a song or two.

Instead of eating out every night, the Iguana Team is excited to announce that they have just finished a fully furnished outdoor kitchen in the back of the hotel. Here you will find a more social space accommodated by a four-burner stove top, an oven, a refrigerator, cupboard space, and utensils. Everything you need to cook tasty, home-cooked meals on a budget is provided. And if you forget some ingredients, an affordable market is just downstairs from the hotel. At night, you will catch the interns and guests sharing Imperials & Pilsens (locally brewed Costa Rican beer), chips, salsa, and other tasty eats. With two picnic-style dining room tables and string lights to set the mood, this spot has become the ideal hub for guests at night.

What many people might not know is that the Iguana Surf Beach Hotel is owned and operated by locals of Tamarindo, Chad and Lindsey Gaston. Chad and Lindsey have lived in Tamarindo for 16 and 12 years respectively. Just like a lot of the people that come to Tamarindo, Chad and Lindsey came to Tamarindo for the surfing. They have stayed here ever since because of the people. Chad and Lindsey have built a local legacy here: including a team of Ticos, Ticas, and international people alike who work together to give travelers the best experience possible–both on the ocean and in town. In an upcoming blogpost, there will be a feature on Chad and Lindsey to give the full Iguana Surf history which includes information on the insights, passions, and dreams of these local entrepreneurs. Check out and book one of Iguana Surf’s amazing Costa Rican surf camps  and enjoy a brand new beachfront hotel & shop with steps to the surf! They look forward to welcoming you!
