Sun, Sand & Surf: Plan Your Epic Costa Rica Spring Break 2022

Sun, Sand & Surf: Plan Your Epic Costa Rica Spring Break 2022

Written by Jennifer LaCharite

The months of March and April, depending on where you live, are considered Spring Break season. It’s a time when college students get a break from the long withering months of classes and homework and get a chance to cut loose. You want to have fun, but hopefully, you come away with a few good memories as well. Traditionally, Spring Break has been about ragers in bikinis, drinks on the beach, and maybe a few fleeting romances. This year, many people are looking for a little more than the typical Spring Break shenanigans. People, especially students that spent last school year attending virtual classes, are ready to break out of their shell in a big way. That’s why a Costa Rica Spring Break is just what you need in 2022!

SUN

The tropical dry forest beauty of Tamarindo Beach is a prime destination for Costa Rica Spring Break visitors looking for a fun beach town with the highest probability of sunny days. In fact, if you’re looking for sunshine, then March and April are the best times of the year to visit Costa Rica. This is the tropical country’s dry season. During these months you can experience the best weather on the Pacific coast, and make the most of the endless sunny days.

Playa Tamarindo is ideal for sunbathing and learning to surf. The average daytime high during the sunny months is 33 degrees Celsius (91 F) and the water is warm. You won’t need a wet suit to surf here! The water temperature won’t be far behind, at around 28 degrees C (82 F). What you will need is a good reef-safe sunscreen that is waterproof, since you’ll be much closer to the equator than normal, and especially since you’ve spent most of the year stuck indoors.

SAND

The beach town of Tamarindo has a lot to offer a Spring Breaker on the prowl for good times. There are endless food options and plenty of beachfront bars to hop. For those traveling in groups for their Costa Rica spring break, a great choice that’s sure to please everyone are the two centrally located food courts serving global cuisine. And who can pass up two-for-one cocktails being served all day at Pandas? Just look for the sign that says “Suck my Cocktails”. You and your crew won’t be disappointed!

The great thing about a trip to Tamarindo beach is its location. At just over an hour from the Liberia airport (and free airport shuttle if you stay with Iguana Surf) you won’t be wasting any of your precious Spring Break time getting around once you land. It’s also close to several other beaches you’ll want to visit during your Spring Break surf trip. Beautiful beaches like Playa Grande, Avellenas, and Langosta are nearby and easily accessible with one of our shuttles.

If you want to see the beaches from a different perspective, try an open bar catamaran cruise to see sunset. Nothing says Costa Rica Spring Break like “open bar”!

Speaking of sunset, you’ll find plenty of action every day at sunset along Tamarindo beach. It’s the place to meet up and takes place every day around 6 pm. Think of a colorful, expansive sky reflecting off the ocean, fire dancers, onlookers, reggae music playing, and cervezas being shared.

Speaking of flights, it’s best to book in advance to get the best Spring Break deals. Don’t wait until the procrastinators all decide to book last-minute and pay premium prices! Expedia is currently showing return tickets between Houston and Liberia (LIR) for $416 USD, and Toronto to Liberia for $566 USD.

We know you’re looking for things to “get lit” on your Costa Rica Spring Break but there are likely still going to be Covid measures to follow in the coming year. Masks indoors, social distancing, and hand washing will still apply to Spring Breakers but fear not! Most of your Costa Rica adventures will be outdoors in the fresh air and pandemic protocols will be the furthest thing on your mind when you’re in the ocean searching for your next wave, hiking a volcano, or discovering the beauty underwater while you snorkel – although that last one will require a mask!

All-in-all Tamarindo will still be that party on the beach scene you’ve been craving (for too long), but things will be a little different for Spring Breakers in 2022 than they’ve been in the past (before Covid). There may even be a curfew in place, with businesses having to shut down earlier than you expect. Check the website of your country’s embassy in Costa Rica to find out what regulations are in place before you come so you’re not surprised.

A Costa Rica Spring Break full of surfing, sunsets at the beach, hanging out poolside, and having adventures with your friends in a tropical paradise is just the thing you need to shake off two years of lockdowns, cancellations, and virtual classes. Start planning your trip now!
