What Does a Surf Camp in Costa Rica Actually Include?

When comparing a surf camp in Costa Rica with booking a hotel and lessons separately, the only question that matters is: what does the price include?

At Iguana Surf in Tamarindo, our surf camp in Costa Rica brings together all the main parts of your trip under one roof. You get structured surf coaching (the kind that actually improves you as a surfer) and beautiful beachfront accommodation in the heart of the coolest surf town in the country. You also get daily breakfast, all the gear you need, tailored support, airport transfers, local experiences and a family-style social atmosphere you can join from the day one. The result is a fully planned surf week, with different room options depending on how much privacy and comfort you want.

Here’s what you can expect from a stay at Iguana Surf. Because a boutique surf lodge Costa Rica experience doesn’t always have to be in a basic hostel.

Are All Surf Camps in Costa Rica the Same?

No. The term “surf camp” covers a wide range of experiences, so it’s worth checking exactly what is included before you book.

Some surf camps are budget-friendly hostel stays with dorm beds, shared bathrooms and a few lessons added to the schedule. Others are more traditional surf lodges, offering simple private rooms, communal spaces and a location near the beach.

Boutique surf camps combine the social side of camp life with a more comfortable, polished stay. Depending on where you book, that may mean private rooms, small-group coaching, equipment access, breakfast, airport transfers and help planning local activities.

None of these formats is automatically better. The right choice really just depends on the kind of trip you want. A solo backpacker may be perfectly happy with a bunk in a social dorm but a couple who’s been saving all year might prefer a private room and fewer logistics to sort themselves.

When comparing a surf camp in Costa Rica, look for:

  • A clear number of coached sessions, rather than some vague promises about “surf instruction.”
  • Small groups and instructors with recognized qualifications.
  • Equipment included for all the practice you want outside your lessons.
  • Accommodation that matches your preferred level of privacy.
  • A convenient location near the beach, restaurants and other essentials.
  • A transparent list of all that’s included. Take note of inclusions like ‘breakfast’ (singular) which could mean you get one breakfast only included and you’ll have to pay separately for the rest.
  • Safety guidance and coaching that is adapted to your experience level. Tailored guidance is what you’re after.
  • Support before arrival, including information about transfers, packing and the weekly schedule. Particularly comforting for solo travelers.

Reading the fine print helps you understand whether you are booking a basic place to sleep with occasional lessons, or a complete surf holiday with coaching, comfort and support built in.

From hostel dorms to boutique beachfront rooms, a surf camp in Costa Rica can look very different depending on where you book.

Why Iguana?

For more than 30 years, Iguana Surf has taught upwards of 200,000 lessons, many of them to people who had never stood on a board before. That experience matters, especially for first-time surfers who want expert instruction in a supportive, well-organized setting.

It is also part of the reason Surf Atlas named Iguana Surf THE best overall surf camp in Costa Rica.

The coaching is what separates a dedicated surf camp from a hotel that simply happens to arrange surf lessons. Iguana’s instructors are ISA-certified, and small groups allow them to give each student feedback suited to their experience and ability.

Because the sessions take place across the week, instructors can build on what you learned previously instead of treating every lesson as a separate introduction.

Do You Have to Stay in a Dorm?

No. Iguana offers a social dorm for budget-minded travelers, alongside private rooms and balcony suites for guests who want more space and privacy.

Joining a surf camp does not automatically mean shared accommodation. While many love the social aspect of sharing a room, we know it’s not everyone’s cup of java. At Iguana Surf, we give you options.

Our Surfer Dorm is perfect for those who are budget-conscious and want a social base anyway. It’s a great fit for solo travelers who want to make friends quickly and spend most of their days in the water or exploring the town. We also have Loft Suites and Balcony rooms that offer hotel-like space to return to after a surf session. Ocean-view balcony rooms are also available if you prefer to keep those Pacific waves in view 24/7.

Whichever room you choose, know that you still get to be a part of the same surf camp community. You can join the coached sessions, meet the group over breakfast, take part in the Avellanas trip, and enjoy the same guided excursions.

The difference is simply how you prefer to sleep and spend your downtime.

What Does a Normal Day at a Surf Camp in Costa Rica Look Like?

Most days kick off with a hearty breakfast and a coached surf session, leaving the afternoon free for more surfing, pool time, walking around Tamarindo or joining a guided excursion.

The ocean always sets the timetable, so no two days are ever the same when you’re at a surf camp. Costa Rica does have idyllic weather year-round, so most mornings kick off with breakfast at Grinds overlooking the beach, then a coached session. Normally, we time the lessons so you hit the water two hours before high tide, when the waves tend to be kindest for learning.

With the right kind of coaching, you’ll be popping up on your board from the very first lesson.

The rest of the day is yours. You might rest your surf muscles by the rooftop pool, head back into the water with a rental board or wander into Tamarindo for coffee, shopping and to grab a bite at the local markets.

In the late afternoon, join other guests at Naia, Iguana’s brand-new rooftop café and sunset bar.

Have you seen it yet? You’re gonna love it.

Why Book a Camp Instead of a Hotel + Lessons?

A surf camp combines the main parts of your trip in one booking, while giving you consistent coaching and more time to enjoy Tamarindo.

While you can absolutely piece this trip together yourself, the biggest benefit of booking a camp is continuity and ease of planning. Yes, you could book a room, track down a surf school, arrange a taxi from Liberia, and hope the rental shop has your board size when you show up. Or you can just click on one box and be done.
