Frequently Asked Questions

What’s included in my Costa Rica surf camp?
  • 7 nights beachfront accommodation
  • Daily breakfast
  • Daily surf lessons with professional bilingual instructors
  • Personalized video analysis
  • Professional surf photo package
  • Unlimited board rentals all week
  • Round-trip airport transfers from Liberia (LIR)

Lunches, dinners and tours are not included — we are happy to help you plan them. One booking, zero logistics.

When does camp start and end?
Saturday to Saturday — 7 nights. Everyone arrives together, learns together, and leaves as a crew.Airport pickup runs Saturdays from Liberia (LIR).
What if I can’t come Saturday to Saturday?
No problem — we’ve got you. Message us your dates and we’ll arrange a private airport transfer and additional private instruction to catch you up with your group. Want to stay longer? We’ll extend your stay before or after camp.Message us your dates → custom quote within 24 hours.
I’ve never surfed. Is that a problem?
It’s our specialty. No experience, balance, or athletic background needed — just the willingness to try. Warm water, gentle sandy-bottom waves, and beginner-focused ISA-certified instructors. Most guests stand up on day one.
How much does it cost?
From $999 per person, all-inclusive. Shared room from $999; private loft suites from $1,990, with ocean-view and balcony upgrades available. Traveling together? Guests sharing a room receive discounted rates.Everything above is included — no surprise costs.
Is it safe for beginners and kids?
Safety is the foundation of everything we do. Sandy-bottom beach break, small groups, ocean safety briefing before every session, CPR-trained staff, and ISA-certified instructors.150,000+ lessons taught since 1989.
How fast will I actually learn?
Everyone learns at their own pace. Our goal is simple: get you standing on day one, then keep building until you are comfortable catching your own waves by the time you leave. Small groups, daily coaching and video analysis are how we get you there.Beginner-friendly, sandy-bottom waves year-round.
What’s the best time of year?
There’s no bad time — Tamarindo has waves year-round. Dec–Apr: sunny and clean, perfect for beginners. May–Aug: bigger swells, fewer crowds. Sep–Oct: the year’s largest swells.Consistency is why Tamarindo is world-famous for learning.
Why book camp instead of a hotel + lessons separately?
One is a vacation you organize. The other is a fully immersive surf experience. Your instructor knows your level, your board is ready, transfers are arranged, and breakfast is waiting — you just surf.Guests tell us the hardest part was deciding to book.
Is this the best surf camp in Costa Rica for beginners?
We believe so — and the surf world agrees. Surf Atlas named Iguana Surf one of the best all-around surf camps in Costa Rica for beginners, families, and multi-level groups. Directly in front of Tamarindo’s best beginner break.Elevated beachfront surf camp — not a party hostel.
Is there parking available?

Parking at Iguana Surf is typical of a Costa Rica beach town. We do not offer private or secured parking. Guests park in the public beach parking area directly in front of Iguana Surf, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

During the day, you’ll likely meet one of the Tamarindo locals who has appointed himself the parking attendant. He helps organize the parking area and can often help you find a space if one is available. There’s no fixed fee. If he was helpful, most people simply thank him with a tip before heading home.

What if the weather is bad on the day of my lesson?

We surf in the rain. Warm water, warm air, and the waves do not care — a rainy session is often the quietest one out there. Wind or a messy swell does not stop us either; your instructor picks the best spot and time for the conditions that day.

The one thing that does stop us is thunder and lightning. Safety comes first, so we come in, wait it out, and reschedule your lesson for later that day or another day in your trip.

Not a beginner — is the camp still for me?

Yes. The camp is beginner-friendly, but it is not beginners-only. Experienced surfers add our Intermediate Package: instead of daily lessons in front of Tamarindo Bay, your surf guide reads the tide, swell and your level, picks the best breaks nearby and takes you there — coaching you in the water and moving your surfing up a level.
