Which surfboard should I use?

Each type of surfboard caters to different skill levels, wave conditions, and surfing styles, so choosing the right one depends on your level of experience and the type of waves you’ll be riding.

Here’s a quick rundown of the three main surfboard types you can rent at Iguana Surf Camp:

Funboard – Ideal for beginners to intermediate surfers.

A versatile board, typically between 7 to 8 feet in length, with a rounded nose and wider midsection. It offers more stability and paddle power than a shortboard, making it easier to catch waves. Funboards strike a balance between the agility of a shortboard and the stability of a longboard, making them ideal for progressing surfers looking for a forgiving ride.

Longboard – ideal for beginners, small wave conditions, and traditional surfers

Longboards are typically 9 feet or longer with a rounded nose and rounded pintail. They offer great stability and glide, making them easy to paddle and catch waves with. Longboards excel in small, mushy waves and are perfect for learning the fundamentals of surfing. They also allow for classic maneuvers like nose-riding and cross-stepping.

Shortboard – Ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers, larger and more powerful waves.

Shortboards are typically between 5’6″ to 7 feet in length with a pointed nose and a narrow, thin profile. They are designed for speed, maneuverability, and performing advanced maneuvers such as aerials and sharp turns. Shortboards excel in steeper, faster waves and are favored by experienced surfers looking for high-performance surfing.
