The next beach north from Playa Tamarindo is called Playa Grande, and it is another awesome spot to check out that is conveniently close to town. It is only about 25 minutes from Iguana Surf’s Tamarindo surf camp in a car, or about 5 minutes by boat! The waves here are bigger, so it is a good spot if you are a more intermediate or advanced surfer. Another beach break, it is a consistent spot where there are almost always waves at least as tall as you are. Another perk is that this is often a great spot to see sea turtles since it is located in a National Park! And definitely stay for the sunset – the beach is south facing so you will see a panoramic view of the sunset, with the sun going below the horizon to your right and the sky lit up by the leftover light to your left.
3. PLAYA AVELLANAS
Heading south from Tamarindo, one of the first beaches you will find is Playa Avellanas. Many would say that this is the next step after one feels comfortable on the smaller waves at Playa Tamarindo. In fact, a trip here is often included in Iguana Surf’s Costa Rica surf camp package. Avellanas is a perfect spot for intermediate and advanced surfers, and along the beach there are many different choices of where to surf depending on the tide, swell, and your level. Some parts are more rocky, and there is also a beach break that is fun when the tide is too high for some of the more regular spots. The waves at Avellanas are fun and consistent, and usually not quite as big as the waves at Playa Grande so it offers an awesome middle ground. This break is about 25 minutes south of Iguana Surf Shop. You can make a day of it and stay for dinner too as there is a nice restaurant called Lola’s located right on the beach. It is named after Lola, a huge pet pig that they have there who you can go say hi to after your meal!

- PLAYA MARBELLA
A little further from Iguana Surf Shop (about an hour and 30 minutes by car), you will find Playa Marbella. For more advanced surfers, this is definitely a break you will want to check out. The waves are bigger and stronger than the previous spots, so it is perfect for advanced visitors. Another plus is that since it is a little further out of town, it is less crowded than some of the other beaches. There will pretty much always be waves at Marbella even if there is no swell, so don’t forget about it on your Costa Rica surf trip!

If you have heard the name of any surf breaks in Costa Rica before, it was probably Witch’s Rock (or Roca Bruja, in Spanish). It became famous after being featured in the second Endless Summer movie by Robert August. The name Witch’s Rock comes from a legend that a witch lives on the rock. We have yet to see her, but you will just have to come see for yourself! The rock is located off the coast of Playa Naranjo and is most easily accessed by boat. Luckily, Iguana Surf organizes many trips regularly that guests can easily be a part of! For advanced surfers, it can also be included in your Costa Rica surf trip package. If you are an advanced surfer, it is an epic break you won’t want to miss.
When the tide gets low at Witch’s, you can take the boat over to Ollie’s Point. It is a point break and visitors to Witch’s often stop there as well. This break is usually big and is definitely worth checking out if you decide to go to that area! Both are perfect for those who want to experience a surf trip in Costa Rica at its finest.
