Tamarindo, Costa Rica surf is well known throughout the world and is perfect for beginners learning to surf. The surf break directly in front of the Iguana Surf Shop is all sand and offers excellent waves for those learning. Our Tamarindo, Costa Rica surf camps offer amazing packages to learn to surf, experience local tours, and stay in the beachfront hotel. There are shared rooms for individuals to private rooms up to family suites – something for everyone. The wifi is strong, the food in the local restaurant in the hotel is delicious, and the staff is very friendly.
We must brag because we think there’s nowhere better to learn to surf. Costa Ricans are super friendly, and you may not know this, but Costa Rica has been called “The Happiness Place on Earth” according to the Happy Planet Index. And that tracks to Tamarindo, a town of Costa Ricans, Americans, Canadians, Germans, Brazilians, Italians, Argentines, French, Korean, Chinese, and more in a beachside community. Townspeople who live here have a commonality: they want to keep the town (and ocean, of course) clean, safe, and easy-going for the tourists who utilize the services. The Tamarindo Community Development Association (ADI, for short), has been successful in dealing with the appropriate agencies to get a brand-new police station built, road construction, recycling program, renovation of a children’s park, beachside lifeguards, daily beach cleanup, and more. There’s even a local branch of the international organization Surfrider Foundation, and the Tamarindo community earned the prestigious Blue Flag ecological award for its dedication to all the aforementioned attributes.
Tamarindo, the town itself, has rebounded well from the pandemic. The beach is open all day, and shops are open, whether you are looking for something to wear, those flip flops, sunscreen, rent or buy a surfboard, groceries, that cerveza! Restaurants—30 of ‘em—have safe distancing seating with a lot of outdoor seating. And now, many resto-bars have live music or house/techno DJs nightly. Following the Ministry of Health guidelines, the three gyms are open, and yoga studios have classes both in their studio and on the beach. For those who must stay in touch with the office back home, Wi-Fi is available in the Iguana Surf Hotel as well as all the cafes, coffee shops, and restaurants.
The United States now requires that anyone returning there must show proof of a negative COVID test. No problem. We have a list of locations, walkable spots, to get the test 72 hours before you leave.
